CPSM vs CPM comparison: ISM supply management certifications for procurement professionals. 2024 exam requirements, costs, and career impact from official ISM data.
Both credentials are issued by ISM (Institute for Supply Management), but the CPSM is ISM's current flagship certification while the CPM is a legacy credential still held by many experienced procurement professionals.
CPSM (Certified Professional in Supply Management): ISM's primary active certification since 2008. Covers strategic sourcing, supplier relationship management, supply chain operations, and financial acumen. ISM is actively marketing CPSM as the credential for modern supply management professionals.
CPM (Certified Purchasing Manager): A legacy ISM credential introduced in 1974. ISM stopped accepting new CPM candidates in 2008 but allows existing CPMs to maintain the credential through continuing education. If you don't already hold a CPM, you cannot earn it — the credential is closed to new candidates.
If you already hold a CPM, this comparison helps you decide whether to upgrade to CPSM. If you're new to procurement, only CPSM is relevant.
The CPSM is a 3-exam series (each ~2 hours, 165 questions):
Per ISM's 2023 Compensation and Benefits Survey (ismworld.org), CPSM holders reported 13% higher median salaries versus non-credentialed procurement professionals. CPM holders reported similar premiums, though the aging demographic of the credential limits direct comparison.
| Item | CPSM | CPM (Renewal Only) |
|---|---|---|
| Member Exam Fee (per exam) | $135 | $100 (renewal fee) |
| Non-member Exam Fee (per exam) | $175 | $140 |
| Total 3-exam series (member) | $405 | N/A (not available) |
| Study Materials | $195–390 | N/A |
If you don't hold a CPM: Pursue CPSM — it's ISM's current active certification and the only new option available.
If you hold a CPM: Consider upgrading to CPSM. ISM offers a CPM-to-CPSM bridge path that recognizes your existing knowledge and reduces exam requirements. The CPSM is increasingly required for senior procurement roles.
Global Note: CPSM has broader international recognition than CPM. For roles in global supply management, CPSM is the preferred credential.
